Speech impediment?

Children with communication "disabilities" are a gift: the opportunity to slow down, open up to alternative ways of perceiving, and creating new neuropathways in our brains. This expands the brain and increases our own intelligence.

That was my response to someone saying they were recommending my son for speech analysis. In order to discern whether it was an accent or true impediment, the school sent home a map of our country with sections marked off in various colors to denote America's various subcultures and dialects. I had to mark off every one of them (except Hawaii and Alaska). I had to add Rez, Ghetto, and Mexicano. I added that he roomed for the greater part of the year with a boy who did have a speech impediment. Legit: a speech impediment CAN become a dialect, people. I told my son; "Bub, if anyone asks what your accent is, just tell them it's rainbow".
