In the end he comes to his senses and turn the Earth back over to her own spirit and daughters; "to nourish and give fruit in due season" (last scene in book of Revelation. He had had that something greater for himself all along, exactly what he needed to wake him up and make him a better 'person'. We're in the daughters' phase now earthwise;
